Gateway Fine Foods
Summerland Way | Kyogle | NSW
I mentioned in my last blog post that I’ve recently relocated from Brisbane to the Northern Rivers region of NSW. I’ve been doing a heap of exploring of the region in my spare time, and one of the places I've really enjoyed is Kyogle.
As I was passing through recently, the lovely old art deco facades of the buildings lining the main street provided the perfect backdrop to people enjoying a stroll through the farmers markets and a bite to eat at one of the cafes.
As a newcomer to the area, it was nice to sit down with Debbie, the owner of Gateway Fine Foods, one of the cafes on the main street. We had a chat about the region; and I was introduced to a variety of the local products and produce that she sources and sells in her cafe and deli. The business has been in operation for 5 years, with the recent addition of a renovated 1956 caravan (an old Lions Club van) that has been fitted out with a commercial kitchen, providing catering for events and long table lunches in the region.
The cafe sources everything as ethically and locally as possible, this includes baked goods and condiments; either made in-house like tomato chutney, beetroot dip, and chocolate quinoa cake; or sourced from suppliers in the Northern Rivers region that share those same values, like the supplier for the cured meats on the tasting boards below. Even those vibrant flowers are sourced locally from someone's property.
Debbie sent me home with a container of that honeycomb perched on the cheese below. Flow hive honey from a local lady at Boorabee Mountain. I’ve been having it on toast for breakfast every morning. The world just might end when I run out!
It seems there are so many options out there for me to get my hands on quality, fresh local products, and I'm looking forward to more exploring on my weekends.
Thanks to Debbie for allowing me to drop in after a long day, it was lovely to meet you and get an education on the local area as I settle in. I’ll be back for a coffee and a stroll through the farmers markets one weekend soon.
