Merricks General Store

February 04, 2018 by Carly Lonergan

Frankston-Flinders Rd | Merricks | VIC

We passed Merricks General Store on our way to our accommodation in Flinders on the Morington Peninsula. The pale yellow exterior of the rustic store, standing out amongst the greenery is what got my attention, and a mental note was made to call in before we left the area.  As it turns out, this establishment proved to be  the full package.

The store complete with its in-store bistro served an enticing breakfast and lunch menus, and a large wine selection. It’s also a place to stock up on house made jams, relishes, muesli and other epicurean delights.  You might even want to indulge in one of their hampers if you’ve got a day planned sight seeing. There are ample opportunities to set up along the gorgeous coastline for a picnic.

This is only the start at Merricks General Store. There is more exploring to be done as you navigate your way through the lush greenery of overhanging vines and exploding, pink hydrangeas to reach ‘The Traders’, a giftware store also on site and just a short stroll away.

If you find yourself a bit weary after deciding which bag to purchase or what bunch of flowers to choose at the gift shop, there’s a little hole in the wall nearby with a friendly barista. You can fuel up on coffee and a choice from the small selection of sweet baked goods if blood sugar levels are low,  all to be enjoyed on the leafy space of  'The Verandah'.  Shopping can be exhausting work!

The philosophy at Merricks General Store appears to be,  making use of local fresh produce and the undertaking of small scale production of their housemade goods wherever possible, and is to be enjoyed in a cosy (even in summer parts of the region are still a wee bit chilly!) environment that  just makes you want to order  one more coffee, and finish reading the newspaper.

If you’re in the region and looking for the quintessential Mornington Peninsular experience Merricks General Store is worth a look. You’ll experience  quality regional flavours, good coffee;  the perfect atmosphere to enjoy it in and ample gorgeous greenery.

Best to get there early if you’re after breakfast, clearly a spot very popular with the locals, and fills up very quickly on the weekend!

The store is open daily 8.30am to 5.00pm.
