Wolston Farmhouse
Grindle Road | Wacol | QLD
Happy Easter! How great is this extra-long weekend situation? A decent amount of time to pack up the car and get away somewhere. Or to stay-put and do nothing at all. If you’ve caught wind of some of my instagram stories, you will have seen that I’ve been posting a fair few pics from North QLD. That’s because I’m up here exploring at the moment and will be into the foreseeable future. I was lucky enough to score a job up here late last year that was great for my career and I went with it. I’m in a fortunate position to be able to do that. I can appreciate that most people can’t. I’ll enjoy it while I can.
I absolutely loved the Northern Rivers and think I will always regard that area as my second home, and wouldn’t at all be surprised if I end up back there again.
Before my stint in the Northern Rivers I lived in Brisbane as you probably remember. Which brings me to my visit to Wolston Farmhouse in Wacol, just north-west of the city. I have to admit, that when I hear ‘Wacol’ I associate the area with a certain correctional facility. Don’t you? I’ll admit now that I was wrong though and felt ridiculous for even wearing my bullet-proof vest in the first place! It’s a really beautiful area, made even more beautiful by the jacarandas that were in bloom at the time.
The farmhouse dates back to the nineteenth-century and is operated by the National Trust of Australia. There is an onsite café called the Tea Terrace perched on an airy verandah at the back of the farmhouse. At the time that I was there, the café was kept up and running by a small team of passionate and knowledgeable ladies (a mixture of both paid employees and volunteer workers). I read now however, that a new catering company has partnered with the National Trust in Queensland and are now providing the food on site. You might have to go check it out for yourself and let me know how you find things now.
I read that there are now special events hosted on site (think live music and farm-stays). I imagine it would also be a beautiful spot for weddings if you’ve got a special day coming up.
You can have a wander through the farmhouse which is essentially a museum, taking a walk down memory lane as you go from room to room. Most of the artifacts were a bit before my gran’s and probably even before her gran’s time. Everyone’s gran had a Singer sewing machine didn’t they? I am also a total sucker for old school crockery.
Going to cut this blog post short and leave things right here. I have beachside bbq’s and chocolate easter eggs awaiting. If you want to learn a bit more about this beautiful old property you can find out more via my link below.
Enjoy your day!
